Grand Canyon dropped to 2-6 in the Western Athletic Conference and 8-13 overall with a 3-0 loss to WAC-favorite New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M., Thursday.
GCU is 1-2 on its four-match-in-six-days road trip. The Antelopes play at Kansas City Saturday. They lost to the Kangaroos 3-2 at GCU Arena last month.
Against the Aggies, picked by coaches to win the WAC this season, GCU lost by set scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-17.
"We competed better than we did last night (in a 3-0 loss at UTEP)," said GCU coach Kris Naber. "That was the team we've seen battle for every point, now the challenge is to take that into our next match at Kansas City."
In the first set, GCU led 10-9 on a
Lanie Muys kill, but the Aggies rallied by scoring 12 of the final 18 points. In the second, New Mexico State pulled away early with a 4-0 run, taking a 6-2 lead, and led the rest of the way. In the third, GCU tied the match, 3-3, on a block by
Kristen Johannsen, but the Aggies began to pull away by scoring seven of the next nine points.
Kaitlynn Ausmus had a team-high eight kills and hit .240 (8-2-25) for the match.
Britta Forsythe had five kills. Muys had a career-best three solo blocks and four kills.
Hayleigh Friemoth also had four kills.
Mackenzie Phelps added 17 digs for the 'Lopes defense. Johannsen had three blocks, including one solo.
"I think we turned some heads tonight, especially early, and represented ourselves well," added Naber. "Next, we need to turn these great efforts into victories."
After Saturday's road-trip wrapup in Kansas City, the Antelopes return for an Oct. 31 match at GCU Arena against Chicago State.
"I know the scores don't reflect it, but I think we'll take some momentum into Kansas City," said Naber.
