Grand Canyon got off to a slow start and dropped Saturday's Western Athletic Conference match to Utah Valley, 3-0, at Antelope Gymnasium.
GCU (7-10, 1-4) lost by set scores of 25-12, 25-14, 25-22. In the third set, GCU made a strong comeback, leading as much as six points as late as 19-13, but the Wolverines (11-10, 5-2) rallied for the straight set victory.
"I'm extremely proud of this group and how they come out and work hard," said GCU coach Kris Naber. "We're learning how to be consistent and they're learning how to compete at a high level. They're willing to make the adjustments we're asking them to and we'll keep adjusting to raise our game."
Junior libero
Mackenzie Phelps, the WAC leader in digs, had a team-high 17.
Shannon Dugan added 11 digs and a co-match best nine kills.
GCU's attack managed 32 kills, but hit just .016, committing 30 errors on 124 tries.
"When you have 32 kills and 30 errors, it's hard to be successful. That's one of those adjustments we need to make," added Naber.
Setter
Jessica Posse had 16 assists and eight digs.
Megan Davis added nine digs. Middle blocker
Kristen Johannsen had a season-high six kills and hit .400 with only two errors in 10 swings.
Utah Valley hit just .205, but out-blocked the Antelopes 11-1 and had four service aces to GCU's two.
The Antelopes begin a five-match road trip Monday with a WAC rematch at Seattle. The Antelopes lost 3-1 to the Redhawks at Antelope Gym earlier this month. Fans can follow Monday's match with live links available at
