Grand Canyon won a marathon first set, but was unable to get another in a 3-1 loss to Seattle U at Connolly Center in Seattle Monday.
GCU (7-11, 1-5) won the opening set 33-31, surviving 18 ties and 10 lead changes, but the Redhawks (8-14, 5-2) got the final three, 25-19, 25-20, 25-21. There were seven ties and four lead changes in the final set.
"We battled better tonight than we have in our last few matches," said GCU coach Kris Naber. "It was nice to see the girls come with more fire.
"The girls showed the composure we're looking for and battled through that first set."
Senior right side hitter
Megan Davis had 16 kills (16-3-38, .342), 14 digs, three service aces and three block assists.
"She did a great job all-around, offensively and defensively," said Naber. "She had a great mentality that we like to see."
Senior setter
Jessica Posse also had a double-double with 26 assists and 12 digs. Senior middle blocker
Kristen Johannsen had a season-best 10 kills (10-2-23, .348). Junior setter
Marilyn Agae had a career-best 20 assists.
Junior outside hitter
Shannon Dugan had 10 kills, nine digs and two service aces. Junior libero
Mackenzie Phelps had a team-high 15 digs to go with two service aces.
Britta Forsythe had nine kills.
The Antelopes had seven service aces to the Redhawks two. Seattle had more kills (68-52), digs (70-60) and blocks (10-7) and hit .292 to GCU's .155.
"When we make the decision to being disciplined in the little things we'll find success," added Naber. "We competed throughout the match tonight and feel like with a few more adjustments we're back on track to playing at the level we need to be."
Monday's contest was the first of five straight road contests. GCU takes on Texas-Pan American Oct. 21, the first of four matches in six nights. The Antelopes will play a non-conference match Oct. 23 at UTEP; head back to the WAC with an Oct. 24 battle at New Mexico State and wrap up the road trip with an Oct. 26 matchup at Kansas City. The team's next home contest is Oct. 31 against Chicago State at GCU Arena.
