Grand Canyon opened its men’s volleyball season at Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto, Calif. and lost to No. 3 Stanford 3-1 Friday.
The Antelopes (0-1) lost by set scores of 25-23, 25-17, 18-25, 25-16.
“It was a typical first match,” said GCU coach Jeremy Price. “There were a lot of ups and downs. We learned where we’re at and were tested by a good opponent.”
Sophomore middle blocker Ryan Mather had a team-high 10 kills and .444 attack percentage. He added two block assists. Frosh middle blocker Christian Ward had a team-best four block assists.
GCU played its best in the third set. The Antelopes hit .417 (13-3-24).
“We played well at times in the first set and a complete set in the third,” added Price.
Junior Erik Jansen, redshirt-freshman Andrew Muys and Ward got their first collegiate starts.
The Antelopes also got a spark off their bench from frosh Gerrard Lipscombe, senior Jordon Tarantino and sophomore Keaton Berry. Lipscombe had a pair of service aces, four kills and four digs. Tarantino had eight kills in three sets. Berry, in two sets, had four kills in five tries.
“They played well off the bench and showed our depth,” Price said.
Junior Ben Ponnet had a team-best 12 digs to go with six kills. Libero Trent Bruns had eight digs. Setter Keith Smith had 37 assists, seven digs and three block assists.
Grand Canyon will play at No. 14 George Mason Wednesday.
