Grand Canyon dropped to 0-2 on the season with a 3-0 loss at No. 14 George Mason Wednesday.
It was the ‘Lopes second match against a nationally-ranked program. GCU lost 3-1 to No. 3 Stanford on Friday.
Against the Patriots, GCU lost by set scores of 25-15, 25-19, 25-19.
It was GCU’s first of three matches on the road against Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association teams. The Antelopes take on NJIT Friday (11 a.m.) and Sacred Heart (2 p..m.) Saturday. Links to live coverage of both matches will be available at www.GCULopes.com.
GCU had short leads in the first two sets. Two Ben Ponnet kills got the ‘Lopes out to a 2-0 first-set advantage. They led by two as late as 13-11 in the second. The Patriots led from start to finish in the third.
“Their group played extremely well tonight and we clearly did not play very well,” said GCU coach Jeremy Price. “We out-dug them (40-31) and had more kills (38-33), but you can’t make 25 more hitting errors (32-7).”
Ponnet had a team highs in kills (8) and digs (10). Ryan Mather and Gerrard Lipscombe each had seven kills. Jordon Tarantino chipped in six. Lipscombe and libero Trent Bruns had seven digs each.
Junior setter Keith Smith had 33 assists, six digs and two block assists. Ben Hunt had five digs and a service aces.
