No. 11 Antelopes Fall To No. 9 Mavericks

GCU Faces Rival Western State Friday
No. 11 Grand Canyon lost its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual of the season in a 21-18 loss at No. 9 Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colo., Thursday.
Seven of 10 matches were decided by two points or less with GCU winning four of the seven, but the Mavericks won two of the other three by fall.
GCU is 12-5 overall in dual meets and 4-1 in the RMAC. It real wrestle conference rival Western State Friday in Gunnison, Colo.
After defending 125-class national champion Kyle McCrite lost a 4-2 decision to CMU’s Jonathan Stelling, the Antelopes won the next three decisions to take a 9-3 lead.
Lino Estrada, at 133, and Mike Hamel, at 141, both won in overtime. Estrada beat Tyler Nelson 3-1 and Hamel picked up a 7-5 decision over Drew Schumann. At 149, No. 8 Bobby Ward, a 2012 All-American, edged James Martinez 6-5.
The Antelopes lost the next three matches and fell behind 15-9, At 157, Ryan Miller, like Estrada and Hamel, went to overtime, but the sophomore was nipped 5-3 by 2012 NCAA Qualifier Jon Gappmaier. Juan Carlos Maynes lost by fall in 2:37 to Tyler Miles in the 165 match, while Martin Fabbian, at 174, lost a 7-6 decision to Zak Slotten.
Brett Sanchez got GCU three points closer with a 3-1 win over 2012 NCAA All-American Nick Peterson at 184.
The teams split wins by fall in the final two matches. GCU frosh Marcus Haughian was pinned, at 197, in 6:22 by Jordan Passehl, while Tyrell Fortune picked up his 28th win, 18th by fall, with a win in 2:58 over 2012 NCAA Qualifier Paco Retana.
