Grand Canyon head coach Kris Naber announced the signing of two high school standouts to be
part of the program’s first NCAA Division I recruiting class.
GCU has received a National Letter-of-Intent from Flagstaff High setter Bree Davis and Frisco, Tex., middle blocker Hannah Hankins.
“We’re excited to bring in Bree and Hannah to be part of our first D-I recruiting class in 2013,” said Naber. “Both players bring in impressive credentials and I look forward to working with them and watching them develop as student-athletes at Grand Canyon University.”
Davis was part of an Arizona Division II state championship team. Her Flagstaff team went undefeated with a 42-0 record. The six-foot setter had 963 assists, averaging 8.4 per set. She also had 97 kills and a .418 hitting percent. A versatile player, Davis added 196 digs (1.7 per set), 97 total blocks and 54 aces.
She was selected Division II First Team All-State by both AZ Central and the Arizona Interscholastic Association. Davis added MVP honors at the Coconino HS Volleyball Tournament and was selected all-tournament at the 2012 Nike Tournament of Champions. The week of Sept. 24, she was named the MaxPreps/American Volleyball Coaches Association Player of the Week.
In 2011 she was selected honorable mention all-state by AZ Central.
Hankins, a six-foot middle blocker from Wakeland High School was named first team District 9-4A all three varsity seasons. She was also selected the district’s Outstanding Middle Blocker and to the league’s all-academic team.
She was Vype Magazine’s Reader’s Choice MVP of Collin County/North Texas, as well as the Wakeland High team MVP. She was the team’s Fighting Heart Award winner in 2011.
Hankins had 362 kills, averaging 3.0 per set and totaled 117 blocks, including 33 solos. She had a .252 kill percentage and added 272 digs (2.2) and 48 (.4) service aces.
GCU is coming off one of its finest seasons in school history. The Antelopes wrapped up play in Division II with a 24-6 record, reaching the NCAA West Region semifinals. It was their second straight and fourth overall trip to the NCAA tournament. They finished No. 21 in the final AVCA national poll.
