Grand Canyon, ranked No. 6 in the Basford Division II poll and No. 12 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings, remained unbeaten in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference duals with a 27-16 win at San Francisco State Sunday.
GCU (12-4) defeated Simpson 47-6, earlier in the day.
Against the host Gators, GCU improved to 4-0 in the RMAC. The Antelopes trailed 10-0 before getting a pin at 174 from junior
Justin Martin. It was the first of five straight victories. GCU’s
Tyrell Fortune, ranked No. 3 in the nation at 285, also won by fall during that stretch. Six more points were put up on the board when defending national champion
Kyle McCrite, ranked No. 2 in the country at 125, received a victory by forfeit.
Brett Sanchez, at 184, and
Marcus Haughian, at 197, each had decisions during the five-match run.
"(Martin) got us rolling," said GCU coach R.C. LaHaye. "This was a great opportunity for him to show us he wants to be a starter here."
Bobby Ward, ranked No. 3 at 149, wrapped up the dual with a win by decision.
"All of our ranked guys are wrestling really well right now," added LaHaye.
Against Simpson, Haughian, Ward and 141-pounder
Mike Hamel each won by forfeit. Fortune, McCrite, Martin and
Ryan Miller (157) added 24 more team points with wins by pin.
Lino Estrada (133) picked up a victory by technical fall.
Fortune extended his single-season school record for pins to 17 and is 27-1 on the season.
The Antelopes take on another RMAC foe Thursday when they visit Grand Junction, Colo., to take on Colorado Mesa, ranked No. 13 by Basford and No. 10 by the NWCA.
"We're getting to the point where we're focusing on our regional matchups, wrapping up our dual season and focusing on the post season," LaHaye said.
