Grand Canyon, ranked No. 12 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, picked up a pair of wins at the Mile High Duals in Prescott, Ariz., Friday.
GCU (9-4) beat NAIA No. 2 Southern Oregon 23-14 and host Embry-Riddle 38-9.
Against Southern Oregon, the Antelopes won four of five matches decided by two points or less, keying the victory over one of the favorites to win the NAIA championship.
“I’ve preached all season that we needed to get a consistent effort and tonight we got it,” said LaHaye.
Lino Estrada (133),
Ryan Miller (157),
Juan Carlos Maynes (165) and
Brett Sanchez (184) all won close decisions.
“We won the close matches with our toughness,” added LaHaye.
Estrada edged out a 4-3 win over Prescott Gardner. Miller beat Dalton Urrutia 5-3. Maynes picked up a 3-1 triumph over Derek Mestrovich and Sanchez earned a 5-4 decision over Jacob Abrams.
Mike Hamel (141) added a win by technical fall and
Tyrell Fortune (285) won by forfeit.
GCU won eight matches against Embry-Riddle. The Antelopes beat ERAU 25-15 earlier this season at Antelope Gymnasium. Estrada, Maynes and
Marcus Haughian (197) all won by fall and Sanchez received a forfeit. All three pins were in the second period.
Miller and
Bobby Ward (149) each won by decision, while
Peter Anguiano (285) and Hamel picked up wins by major decision.
“All in all, it was a great effort. I’m really proud of our guys,” LaHaye said.
GCU will wrestle its redshirts and backups Saturday in Prescott for the Mile High Open.
The dual season resumes Jan. 25 at Menlo on Atherton, Calif. On Jan. 27, GCU will wrestle at Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe San Francisco State and take on the hosts and Simpson.
