No. 12 Grand Canyon won the first six matches and went on to a 30-10 victory over New Mexico Highlands in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference battle at Antelope Gymnasium Thursday.
GCU improved to 7-4 overall in duals and 3-0 in the RMAC. The Cowboys dropped to 2-2 and 0-1.
Ryan Miller, at 157, and
Brett Sanchez, at 184, picked up two of the bigger wins for the ‘Lopes.
Miller, down 4-2 with time running out in the third period, earned a two-point reversal and added a two-point near-fall right before the buzzer to earn a 6-5 win over Juan Alvarado, who received one bonus point for riding time.
“That’s why you wrestle the entire seven minutes and not 6:50,” said GCU coach R.C. LaHaye. “I’m proud of how he wrestled all the way to the buzzer.”
Miller just missed getting the Antelopes six points. The mat was slapped for a pin, but it occurred just after the final buzzer.
Sanchez, who was coming off a 3-0 weekend at the NWCA National Duals, including a win over two-time All-American and nationally-ranked Tanner Keck of Central Oklahoma, picked up where he left off with a 3-0 win over Igor Gomzin, the Cowboys’ top wrestler.
“That was a big win for Sanchez,” said LaHaye. “He’s been beating a lot of good kids lately and that’s -- by far -- their best kid. If (Sanchez) wrestles for seven minutes he’s a dangerous matchup for anyone.”
GCU opened quickly with a pair of major decision victories. At 125, defending national champion
Kyle McCrite beat Jeremy Schweisow 9-1.
Lino Estrada followed at 133 with a 10-1 victory over Anthony Munoz.
Redshirt freshman
Chayse Jackson edged out a 4-3 triumph over NMHU’s redshirt frosh Dan Gaylor at 141.
At 149, back in the lineup for the first time in nearly two weeks, All-American
Bobby Ward beat Mariano Montoya 15-5.
Following Miller’s exciting victory, GCU made it six straight when
Juan Carlos Maynes took the 165-class match 2-0 over Travis Saxon.
To round out the night,
Peter Anguiano, wrestling for nationally-ranked Tyrell Fortune, won impressively with a pin in 2:54 against Robert Rockhill.
“Peter is an All-American caliber wrestler,” said LaHaye. “He’s capable of doing great things and gets excited for the opportunity when we call on him.”
GCU wrestles in the Mile High Duals in Prescott, Ariz., Friday. The Antelopes take on host Embry-Riddle at 3:30 p.m. and follow against one of the NAIA’s top programs in No. 2 Southern Oregon.
