The Grand Canyon University women’s soccer team lost their season opener to Sonoma State today, 4-1, in the first of two games as part of the Dixie State Kick-Off Classic in St. George, Utah. The game was the first regular-season contest for both squads.
The Antelopes scored their lone goal on a penalty kick by
Sasha Scott in the 57
th minute. Goalkeeper
Cat Lena played the entire 90 minutes and had two saves. Sonoma State goalkeeper Alexis Sciacqua, who also played the entirety of the game, had five saves.
The 'Lopes had six shots, all of which were on goal.
Jessica Lincoln accounted for three of those shots, while
Chelsea Santos and
Celia Myers had one apiece. Sonoma State countered with 12 shots, half of which were on goal.
Sonoma State got off to a fast start as they scored three goals in the first half and tacked on one more in the second. In the first half, the Seawolves scored in the fifth minute from center left and followed that up with another goal from the right side in the 18
th minute. The third goal came from the left side with just over 16 minutes to play in the half. The Seawolves' fourth goal came in the 65th minute of play on a shot from right center.
The Seawolves' Cara Curtin had two goals on three shots.
GCU will next be in action when they play 13
