Grand Canyon’s annual alumni volleyball match gave coach Kris Naber two reasons to be happy.
No. 1, the 18th year head coach was pleased her team performed well in its final exhibition prior to the regular-season opener Friday at GCU Arena. No. 2, she enjoyed reminiscing with former players and teammates.
“It was a wonderful night,” said Naber of Saturday’s yearly preseason event at Antelope Gymnasium. “Every girl here I either coached or played with. I’ve really been blessed to be here at Grand Canyon and the opportunity to be a part of their lives.”
Four teams participated, two with current players and two with alums. Fifteen alums played while others were among the crowd of 200-plus to watch six single-set matches played on two courts.
“Our goal tonight was to play at a high level consistently and work on ball control and our system and I think we did a great job,” said Naber. “I saw a lot of positive things from everyone.”
GCU opens the regular season at home with the eight-team Holiday Inn Grand Canyon University Invitational. Matches will be played at Antelope Gymnasium and GCU Arena. The Antelopes will play all four of their matches – two Friday, two Saturday – at the Arena. They open at 2 p.m. Friday against Colorado-Colorado Springs.
