Grand Canyon starts the first of three straight Pacific West Conference road trips with a four-game set Friday and Saturday against Dominican University of California in San Rafael, Calif.
GCU (24-13, 11-3) comes into the series tied for second place in the PacWest with Dixie State. Both are one and one-half games behind first-place California Baptist.
The Antelopes have some momentum, finishing second in the championship division of the Tournament Champions, losing to No. 9 CSU Monterey Bay in the title game last weekend. Earlier last week, GCU went 3-1 in a PacWest series against 2010 National Champion Hawai’i Pacific.
GCU also received nine votes and are just outside the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25. In conference play, the Antelopes have won each of their four series, going 3-1 against HPU, Hawai’i Hilo -- in Phoenix -- and at Academy of Art. The ’Lopes swept Chaminade in a two-game series at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium.
“We’re hoping our bats stay strong and our pitchers continue to work with our defense to get outs,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “We have to play fundamental ball.”
Pierson also said the Penguins, though in the cellar of the PacWest, are a dangerous team, finishing the Tournament of Champions with a win over Humboldt State and putting a scare into first-place California Baptist before losing, 3-0.
“Last year, they had us down 6-0 (before we came back). You can’t look passed anyone or assume anything in the PacWest,” said Pierson. “If we’re not ready to play, we’re going to get beat. We have to be ready and have a sense of urgency from the first inning on.
“Dominican plays with as much heart as any team we’ll face and they have some kids that can play.”
