Grand Canyon pulled within one-half game of first-place California Baptist with a Pacific West Conference doubleheader sweep of Dominican University of California at McInnis Park in San Rafael, Calif. Friday.
GCU won 11-4 in the opener and 10-2, in five innings, in the second game. The Antelopes improved to 26-13 overall and 13-3 in the PacWest. Dominican dropped to 3-32 and 0-17.
California Baptist leads the PacWest with a 15-4 league mark. A first-year NCAA Division II member, Cal Baptist is not eligible for the league’s automatic bid. Dixie State is one-game behind GCU at 13-5 in league play. Cal Baptist and Dixie State are idle this weekend.
The Antelopes pounded out 15 hits in the opener and 11 in the second contest and did not make an error in either ballgame.
Kiki Sepulveda (9-3) had the complete game victory in game one.
Danielle Legee (1-1) won in relief in game two.
In the opener, GCU jumped out with three runs each in the first two innings.
In the first, with two outs,
Kelsey Barak singled and scored on a double from
Lauren Regester.
Nicole Upshaw followed with a two-run home run.
In the second,
Kayla Henry,
Haley Walker and
Stephanie Smith each got on with walks.
Kara Holtorf and Barak followed with sacrifice flies. Regester tripled to score Smith.
A single from
Vanessa Chavez started the third inning scoring. Sepulveda had a sacrifice bunt and Walker came up with an RBI-single to give GCU a 7-1 lead.
Dominican cut it to 7-4 before the Antelopes added three more in the sixth and another in the seventh.
In the sixth, Holtorf singled and stole two bases. Barak tripled to score Holtorf. She later scored on a passed ball. Regester hit her second double of the game – and third extra-base hit, Upshaw singled and Sepulveda hit Grand Canyon’s third sacrifice fly of the game. In the seventh, after Smith reached on an error, Holtorf and Barak each singled.
Regester, Barak and Upshaw each went 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
“Our defense was outstanding and we made some tough plays and ran down some balls in the outfield,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “We were aggressive on the bases and made things happen, not just with stolen bases, but just getting that extra base.”
In game two, GCU was trailing 2-1, when it scored twice in the second inning. Again, GCU got its rally going with two outs. Henry reached on an infield single and stole second base. After
Claire Zampini was hit by a pitch, Smith doubled in both runners.
Legee relieved starter
Brittany Manzoline to begin the third and gave up just two hits and struck out two in three innings of relief.
“She just threw great,” praised Pierson of her sophomore reliever.
Grand Canyon broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning. Chavez and
Christine Jordan (CJ) Norvell reached on errors. Henry and Zampini had back-to-back RBI-singles. Another run scored on a Smith sac fly and Holtorf drove in a run with a double.
The teams meet again Saturday for an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
