The Grand Canyon University women’s tennis team fell 5-1 to Hawai’i Pacific today in the opening round of the NCAA Championships at the University of Hawaii Tennis Complex in Honolulu, Hawai’i.
The 13
th-ranked Antelopes close out their season with a 15-9 record and now have amassed 31 wins over the past two seasons (16-5 in 2011). The fifth-ranked Sea Warriors advance to the Round of 16 to be played in Louisville, Ky. from May 16-19.
“The girls fought hard,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “There were great matches on every court. I'm proud of the girls' efforts all season.”
GCU played well in the doubles competition as
Katharina Mittag and
Frederique Van de Velde, ranked No. 8 in the West, knocked off HPU’s Magdalena Smejova and Vivian Hansen, ranked No. 5 in the West, 8-5. HPU won the other two doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead.
The Sea Warriors used straight-set victories at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles to capture their fifth point and the match victory.
Today marked the final collegiate match for GCU’s lone senior,
Cecilia Vergnet. She completed her season with a 14-9 overall singles record and was 16-6 in doubles play. Vergnet was named the PacWest Newcomer of the Year in 2010.
