The final weekend of the regular season couldn’t be more important.
Grand Canyon softball welcomes Pacific West Conference rival Dixie State for a crucial four-game series that will decide which team gets the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA West Regional and which team must wait until Monday morning’s NCAA Selection Show to see if its season will continue.
“It’s four big games against a great team,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “We have a lot at stake. It’s exciting to have the opportunity to play against another great program, especially with the rivalry the two programs have.”
California Baptist has won the PacWest softball title, but since it is transitioning from NAIA to NCAA Division II is ineligible for the post season. GCU or Dixie State will get the conference’s automatic bid to the regional. Dixie holds a two-game lead over Grand Canyon. The Red Storm is 23-5 in the PacWest and 33-10 overall. GCU is 20-6 and 33-16.
In the latest NCAA West Region poll, Dixie State is No. 3 and GCU has what would be the final at-large spot at No. 8. Eligible conference champions from the PacWest, California Collegiate Athletic Association and Great Northwest Athletic Conference get automatic berths. Five at-large selections will be announced by the NCAA at 7 a.m. Monday.
If GCU wins three of the four games against Dixie State, it will earn the league’s bid into the region tournament. Doubleheaders begin at noon both Friday and Saturday. Fans unable to attend the games can follow live stats. A link to the live coverage is available at

It’s an extra-special weekend for Grand Canyon’s four seniors –
Brittany Manzoline,
Vanessa Chavez,
Christine Jordan (CJ) Norvell and
Kara Holtorf. The quartet will play their final home games on Saturday. They will be honored prior to the Saturday doubleheader at 11:30 a.m.
“It’s bittersweet,” said Pierson of the seniors’ ceremony. “We’re excited to honor our seniors on their great careers and as ambassadors of our program. It’s a great honor, but difficult knowing the reality that we won’t have them back next year.”
The first 200 GCU fans to come out to Stapleton-Pierson Field each day will get a free t-shirt.
