Grand Canyon was swept in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader against Dixie State at Stapleton-Pierson Field Friday.
The Antelopes lost 14-3 in the opener and 11-1 in game two. With the two losses, Dixie State secures second place in the PacWest and the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA West Region. League champion California Baptist is ineligible due to transition rules from the NAIA to NCAA Division II.
GCU and Dixie State finish the regular season Saturday on the Antelopes Senior Day at Stapleton-Pierson. Senior Day festivities begin at 11:30 a.m. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
The Antelopes are 33-18 overall and 20-8 in the PacWest and still hopeful to get one of the NCAA West Region at-large bids.
Eight teams make the tournament. GCU is ranked eighth in the last region poll. Three bids are guaranteed to top representatives of the PacWest, California Collegiate Athletic Association and Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
“We didn’t have enough of anything today,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson of her team’s performance. “Against a bad team or maybe a good team you can skate by, but not against a team as talented as Dixie.”
Dixie State opened scoring in game one with a five-run third inning, but the Antelopes answered quickly with three in the bottom half of the frame.
Lauren Regester drove in
Haley Walker and
Kara Holtorf – both had singled – with a single to right field.
Kelsey Barak, who had walked, scored on a single from Nicole Upshaw.
Dixie came back with two more in the fourth, one in the fifth and six in the sixth inning.
Kiki Sepulveda dropped to 13-6 with loss. Holtorf went 3-for-3 and Upshaw had two hits.
Grand Canyon opened the second game with a 1-0 lead.
Stephanie Smith was hit by pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. Holtorf singled and moved up on an error. Smith scored on the play.
The Red Storm took command with an eight-run second inning.
“We didn’t stay in the game with our pitching or our defense and our lack of run production was disappointing,” Pierson said. “I felt (Holtorf and Walker) were the bright spots today.”
