On Senior Day at Stapleton-Pierson Field Saturday, Grand Canyon split a Pacific West Conference doubleheader with Dixie State, winning the first game 1-0 and losing the second 8-0.
GCU finishes the regular season 34-19 overall and 21-9 in the PacWest.
The Antelopes, ranked eighth in the latest NCAA West Region poll, must wait until Monday’s
NCAA Selection Show – 7 a.m. on NCAA.com – to find out if it will be selected to the post season.
Eight teams play in the region tournament. Highest finishing eligible teams in the PacWest, California Collegiate Athletic Association and Great Northwest Athletic Conference earn automatic bids. Five at-large teams will be selected Sunday night and announced on Monday morning’s webcast.
“I think we’ve had a great year,” said GCU head coach Ann Pierson. “I think if you keep your losses under 20, they’ve got to take a serious look at you. We have a better record than the teams hovering around us and there’s no question about the strength of our schedule.
“I think the committee knows how strong we are. We have to sit back and hope that’s enough.”
In game one, sophomore
Kiki Sepulveda threw a seven-hit shutout to pick up her team-best 14th win of the season.
GCU scored the game’s lone run in the second. Senior
Vanessa Chavez reached on an error and moved to second on a sac bunt from Sepulveda. Frosh
Kayla Henry hit an opposite field double down the left field line to score Chavez with the game’s only run.
“Kiki pitched the best game she’s thrown all year,” said Pierson. “She hit her spots and kept them off-balance and she and her teammates played great defense. I can’t say enough about the game she threw. When you hold a team that scored (25) runs the day before. That’s a great job.”
Dixie State broke the second game open with a six-run fourth inning.
Kara Holtorf had hits in each game to extend her hitting streak to 10 games. She had a 15-game hitting streak earlier in the season.
Prior to the first game, GCU honored its four seniors, Chavez, Holtorf,
Brittany Manzoline and
Christine Jordan (CJ) Norvell.
The Antelopes also paid tribute to four seniors from the Dixie State team.
“I’m really proud of this team for the challenges they overcame,” said Pierson. “It’s a special group of kids in terms of character, integrity, work ethic and ability. I’m honored to be a part of a team like this. I haven’t had one (in my previous eight years here) like it.
“I’m glad our seniors got to go out with such a good group of kids.”
