The Grand Canyon University baseball team heads to St. George, Utah this week for a four-game set with Dixie State that will wrap-up the Pacific West Conference portion of their 2012 schedule.
The Antelopes (24-20) enter the week in third place in the conference with a 21-15 record, just two games behind the Red Storm. Dixie is currently holding down the fifth spot in the newly released NCAA West Region poll. The top four teams in the West Region will advance to the NCAA Tournament.
The Antelopes pitching staff has been key to their surge up the PacWest standings.
Brady Wager (7-3) has won his last five-straight starts, producing a 2.20 ERA (9 ER in 36.2 IP) during the stretch. He leads all PacWest pitchers with 73 strikeouts. Wager was named the PacWest Pitcher of the Week, last week, for his complete-game shutout win on April 19 at Academy of Art.
Jorge Perez enters the weekend with a 2-3 record and 2.66 ERA (14 ER in 47.1 IP). His most recent outing was a complete-game (7.0 inn.) four-hit shutout in the ‘Lopes’ 4-0 win at Academy of Art on April 20.
The offense continues to be led by
Derek Mendoza and
Michael Pomeroy. Mendoza leads the PacWest with a .443 batting average (66-for-149) and is followed by Pomeroy, who is hitting .422 (70-for-166).
The two sides met for a four-game series from Feb. 17-18 at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix. GCU won the opener, 4-3, but lost the final three contests.
Dixie State comes into this series with 7-7 record over their past 14 games. The Red Storm’s pitching staff has logged a 3.94 ERA (145 ER in 331.1 IP), second best in the league.
The series starts off with a single tonight at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. (Arizona time). The two will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 3 p.m. and a single game on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. All games can be followed via live stats and live audio at
