Grand Canyon stayed in the hunt for the Pacific West Conference automatic bid or an NCAA West Region at-large berth with a Pacific West Conference doubleheader sweep of BYU-Hawai’i at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium Monday.
GCU improved to 33-16 overall and 20-6 in the PacWest. The Antelopes have four regular season games remaining, all against Dixie State, which is 23-5 in league games.
GCU plays host to the Red Storm with noon doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium.
The Antelopes would need to win three of the four games against Dixie State this weekend to earn the automatic qualifier.
GCU can still get an NCAA at-large berth. Currently, the Antelopes are eighth in the NCAA West Region poll. Eight teams qualify for the region. Three bids go to conference automatic qualifiers in the PacWest, California Collegiate Athletic Association and Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The remaining five spots go to at-large teams from the three leagues.
In Friday’s opener, GCU needed a fifth-inning two-run double from freshman
Lauren Regester to defeat the pesky Seasiders. Regester’s hit gave the Antelopes a 2-0 lead. BYU-Hawai’i got a solo home run from Noelle Lake in the seventh before GCU sophomore reliever
Janelle Christman retired the Seasiders to end the game.
Starter
Kiki Sepulveda improved to 13-5 and gave up six hits and no earned runs through six innings. The Antelopes had just six hits, two coming from Sepulveda.
Frosh left fielder
Haley Walker started the fifth inning off with a single and stolen base. With two out,
Kelsey Barak reached on a walk. Both scored on Regester’s two-bagger to right-center field.
“The first game was very uncomfortable,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “BYU played well and out-hit us. Thankfully, Kiki threw a
good game and Lauren had a big hit.
“Our defense was good. The idea was to have the pitching and defense keep us going until our offense came around and that’s what we did.”
The offense came out from the start in game two.
Stephanie Smith, who went 4-for-5, and
Kara Holtorf opened the game with singles. With two out, both scored on a
Nicole Upshaw single to right field.
Brandi Gaffin started the second inning off with a single and later scored on a Holtorf sac fly.
GCU added three in the fourth, four in the fifth and two more in the sixth and finished with 16 hits.
Two BYU-Hawai’i errors aided the three-run fourth. In the fifth,
Kayla Henry started it off by adding to her single-season school record for triples with her 10th. She scored on a Walker sacrifice fly. Smith and Holtorf had singles prior to Barak’s team-best eighth home run of the season.
“We made our adjustments at the plate earlier (in the second game),” said Pierson. “We learned from game one and had some good at-bats. They started understanding that when you put the ball on the ground, good things happen. We really swung our bats well.”
Henry had three hits, including her first double of the season. Holtorf, Upshaw and Walker each had two hits. Barak and Upshaw both had three RBI. Holtorf and Henry each scored three runs.
Danielle Legee picked up the win to improve to 4-2.
