The Grand Canyon University baseball team used stellar pitching to sweep Academy of Art in a doubleheader this evening, 8-0 and 9-4, at Laney College in Oakland, Calif.
The sweep improved the Antelopes’ overall record to 22-20, 19-15 in the Pacific West Conference. Art U falls to 3-33, 3-23 in the league.
Brady Wager (7-3) was dominant in game one, tossing a complete-game two-hit shutout. He fanned nine over his 9.0 innings, while walking only three.
GCU broke open a scoreless tie with two runs in the fifth inning.
P.J. Garcia led off the inning with a walk and later scored on an outfield error by the Urban Knights’ right fielder.
Ernesto Ortiz would record an RBI single later in the inning to put the Antelopes up 2-0.
Michael Pomeroy’s bases-clearing double in the seventh pushed GCU’s advantage to 5-0.
Jackie Samora’s sacrifice fly in the inning put the ‘Lopes up 6-0 after seven.
The Antelopes scored a run in the eighth and ninth to close out the scoring.
Derek Mendoza had two hits in game one to pace the ‘Lopes.
Coltin White (5-1) picked up the win in the second game, allowing no runs on two hits over 6.0 innings. He tied his career high with 10 strikeouts, matching the 10 he fanned a little over a year ago (April 16, 2011) in a 4-3 win at Academy of Art on the same field.
Mendoza put the ‘Lopes on top with a RBI single in the first inning.
Kyle Peterson keyed a two-run second inning with a RBI double that scored
Charles Wagner.
The Antelopes would score a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to open a 7-0 lead. Nick Chapman recorded a sacrifice fly and Pomeroy a RBI single in the fourth. Chapman’s second sacrifice fly in as many innings and
Joey Bristyan’s RBI single did the damage in the fifth.
After going up 9-0, GCU needed to hold off a final Art U rally that saw them plate four runs in the seventh and leave the bases loaded.
Garcia led the offense with three hits in game two, while Bristyan, Pomeroy, Mendoza, Wagner, Peterson and
Aaron Mees had two hits.
The two squads will meet again tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. The games can be followed via live stats at
