Grand Canyon ends the road portion of its Pacific West Conference regular-season schedule with a four-game series at Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, Calif., Friday and Saturday.
GCU (28-15, 15-5) comes into the game three games behind first-place Dixie State. The first place team in the conference earns an automatic bid into the NCAA West Region.
The conference champions of the PacWest, CCAA and GNAC all earn automatic berths into the eight-team region. In the most recent regional rankings, released Wednesday, Grand Canyon is in the eighth and final post season spot.
“They’re urgent,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson of the team’s upcoming games. “I’ve talked to the kids about the mathematics and what’s left, but it’s not about the pressure, it’s about the challenge.”
Doubleheaders at NDNU start at 1 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday. The Argonauts are 19-26 overall and 6-14 in the PacWest, but have lost eight one-run games.
“Their record doesn’t show how good they are. We are aware of that and our kids are aware of that,” Pierson said of the Argos. “They’re a talented, well-coached team.”
There will be no live coverage available for the series.
Following these final road PacWest games, GCU plays host to BYU-Hawai’i Monday for a noon doubleheader, then welcome Dixie State April 27-28 for a crucial season-ending four-game series.
“We’re in good position to still control our destiny,” said Pierson. “We’re excited about playing these kinds of games at this point of the season and we’ll have to play well to win them. We have to take it one game, one inning and one pitch at a time.”
