Grand Canyon opened its four-game Pacific West Conference series at Notre Dame de Namur with a doubleheader sweep of the Argonauts at Notre Dame High School in Belmont, Calif., Friday.
Kiki Sepulveda threw a six-hitter and had an RBI-double in a 6-1 victory in the opener.
Brandi Gaffin hit a two-run homer to help rally the Antelopes in an 8-3 win in the second game.
“Definitely the way we wanted to get the weekend started,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson.
The Antelopes improved to 30-15 overall and 17-5 in the PacWest. NDNU dropped to 19-27 and 6-16. The teams will end the series Saturday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader in Belmont.
A Sepulveda single started a two-run fourth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie.
Kayla Henry followed with a single and after a
Haley Walker ground out,
Stephanie Smith singled to score Sepulveda. Henry scored when
Kara Holtorf reached on a fielder’s choice.
Grand Canyon added insurance with a three-run seventh.
Vanessa Chavez and Sepulveda opened the inning with back-to-back doubles. Walker and Smith each had RBI-singles in the inning.
The Antelopes had 11 hits in the game. Smith, Sepulveda and Henry each had two. Holtorf, who had a GCU season-best 15-game hitting streak end last weekend at Cal Baptist, started a new streak with a hit in the opener.
In the second game,
Danielle Legee improved to 3-1 with a complete game victory. It was her first complete game of the season. Legee gave up seven hits and was aided by three double plays.
Trailing 2-0 in the second, Gaffin hit her second home run of the season.
The Antelopes had 11 hits, again. Walker, Holtorf,
Lauren Regester and
Claire Zampini each had two hits. Henry had her team-best 17th stolen base.
Grand Canyon took the lead with a four-run third inning. It started with a Zampini bunt single and Walker double. An error on a Holtorf grounder scored the go-ahead run.
Kelsey Barak – who owns the longest current hitting streak at 10 games -- had a two-run triple and later scored on a wild pitch.
“Kiki and Danielle each threw good games and our defense was outstanding,” said Pierson. “We got a lot of key hits and we ran the bases real well.”
The Antelopes are in the hunt for one of eight NCAA West Region tournament berths. Three go to conference champions from the PacWest, CCAA and GNAC. Five receive at-large bids.
GCU has the eighth and final spot in the latest NCAA West Region rankings and is in third place in the PacWest, three and one-half games behind league-leader California Baptist and two games behind second-place Dixie State. Cal Baptist, transitioning to NCAA Division II from NAIA, is ineligible for the region tournament. If Cal Baptist wins the conference, the second place team will get the automatic bid.
Grand Canyon has eight regular-season games remaining, including Saturday’s doubleheader. The final six games are at home, beginning with a doubleheader Monday with BYU-Hawai’i. The regular season ends next weekend with a four-game series with Dixie State.
