Grand Canyon (28-15, 15-5) was swept in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader at California Baptist (34-6, 17-4) Saturday.
The Antelopes relinquished first place to the Lancers, with losses of 11-1 and 9-5.
“We didn’t execute the gameplan and that’s what happens when you do that against a very good team,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “A very good team will hit every mistake you throw up there, and they did.”
Trailing 5-0 in game two, GCU scored five of its own in the second.
Claire Zampini hit a bases-loaded triple to key the inning.
Lauren Regester and
Vanessa Chavez had singles and
Nicole Upshaw and
Kayla Henry reached on a walks prior to Zampini’s hit. Zampini scored on a ground out.
“Claire had a great at-bat,” said Pierson. “She got a good pitch and was ready to drive it.
“That’s a characteristic of our team (after being down 5-0), we always come back.”
Still tied 5-5 in the fifth, Cal Baptist hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to take an 8-5 lead.
GCU was only out-hit 10-9, but the Lancers had five home runs and six extra-base hits. Zampini’s triple was the only extra-base hit for the Antelopes
.
Chavez, Regester and
Kelsey Barak each had two hits in the game. Haley Walker had a pinch-hit.
In relief,
Kiki Sepulveda suffered the loss. She was also the losing pitcher, as a starter, in game one.
In the opener, Grand Canyon just missed jumping out to a 2-0 lead.
Kara Holtorf reached on a one-out walk. Barak’s long drive to left field hit the fence and stayed in play. Holtorf was forced to hold up at third and Barak got a double rather than a two-run home run. The next two hitters struck out to end the inning and keep the game scoreless. In the bottom half of the inning, Cal Baptist got five runs, all coming with two outs.
It was 8-0 after four innings. Grand Canyon came up with one in the fifth. With two out, Holtorf singled. Barak followed with a triple to right field.
GCU had five hits in the opener. Holtorf and Barak each had two. Brandi Gaffin had a second-inning single.
“We didn’t make adjustments at the plate (in the opener),” said Pierson. “Our defense was solid all day.”
Grand Canyon hits the road for the final time in PacWest play with a four-game series April 20-21 at Notre Dame de Namur.
“Everything left is urgent,” added Pierson, whose club is ninth in the latest region rankings (the top eight qualify for the NCAA tournament).
