The Grand Canyon University baseball team lost both games of their doubleheader against Cal Baptist today at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz. The Antelopes now own a 20-19 overall record and 17-14 mark in the PacWest Conference, while the Lancers improved to 33-8 overall and 26-5 in conference play.
"We left our game plan a little bit tonight, but to their credit, they pitched very well," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "They have a nice pitching staff. They pitched down in the zone and sinked the ball today. I don't know that we pitched as well as we can. The home runs they hit were elements of us leaving some pitches up in the zone. Our starters didn't do what they normally can do today. We just put ourselves in a hole and it was hard to get out of. But the guys stayed on it and gave us an opportunity at the end in both games."
GCU fell 3-1 in the first contest after being held to just two hits over 7.0 innings. Starter
Jorge Perez was tagged with his third loss after allowing three runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
Sam Moore tossed a scoreless seventh inning in relief.
CBU starter Jon Bengard picked up the win and Matt Daugherty, who started at first base, came in to secure the save.
The ‘Lopes did not make it easy for Daugherty, however, as he inherited runners at first and second base, both of which advanced on his wild pitch to pinch-hitter
P.J. Garcia. Garcia ultimately drew a walk in the at-bat to load the bases before
Aaron Mees grounded out to first base.
Joey Bristyan and
Michael Pomeroy were the lone GCU players to collect a hit in the first contest.
Coltin White was charged with the 7-4 loss in the second contest after allowing six runs on six hits and three walks with a strikeout over 2.2 innings.
Cody Repenning tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in relief, while
Coley Bruns allowed a run over 3.0 innings.
"Coltin wasnt himself, he wasn't as sharp and walked guys, which he normally doesn't do," added Stankiewicz. "We have to try to figure out how to get him back on track because we need him to be successful the rest of the season."
CBU starter Devyn Rivera improved to 4-0 after allowing four runs, only of which was earned, over 6.2 innings. For the second straight game, Matt Daugherty took the mound after starting at first base and secured his sixth save of the season.
The ‘Lopes once again made it interesting in the seventh inning as they scored three runs and had the bases loaded with two outs for
Derek Mendoza, who drew a full count before eventually being called for a strikeout looking to end the game.
"I think part of the program growing up is instilling in the players that whether you are up by five or down by five, you have to have a consistency about you at the plate, on the mound and running the bases," Stankiewicz said. "I would like to see a little more fight out of our guys when we get down. It was good to see that they rallied tonight and got people in the right spots late in the game."
Garcia led GCU offensively after going 2-for-3 at the plate, while Bristyan,
Charles Wagner,
Harlyn Griffiths, Mees and
Kyle Peterson each collected a hit in the second game.
The two teams will conclude their four-game series tomorrow when they square off at Brazell Stadium at noon.
