The Grand Canyon University baseball team dropped a non-conference game to Cal Poly Pomona today, 16-4, at Scolinos Field in Pomona, Calif.
The loss drops the Antelopes to 19-17 overall. The Broncos, ranked sixth in the west region, improved to 23-13.
GCU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles from
Michael Pomeroy and
Jackie Samora. The ‘Lopes went up 3-1 in the third on singles by Pomeroy,
Derek Mendoza and a RBI groundout from
Lucas Leifeld.
After falling behind 5-3, the Antelopes scored a run in the seventh to cut the Broncos lead to 5-4.
Joey Bristyan led off the inning by being hit by a pitch and later scored on Pomeroy’s RBI single. The Broncos answered in the bottom half of the inning with a 10-run, eight-hit outburst that put the game away.
Justin Lindsey started for GCU and allowed a run on four hits over 2.0 innings.
Coltin White and
Jorge Perez followed with scoreless innings in relief.
Sam Moore (0-1) entered in the fifth and was touched for three runs on four hits in 1.2 innings.
Coley Bruns,
Cody Repenning,
Austin Buelow and
David Wydeven surrendered 12 runs over 1.2 innings combined.
Pomeroy led GCU going 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Mendoza added two hits.
Grand Canyon will return home for their final time this season when they host Cal Baptist in a four-game set from April 12-14 at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix. The two squads will meet for a single game beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday and single game at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
