The Grand Canyon University baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Hawai’i Pacific today, winning 4-1 and 7-3 at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz. GCU also swept a doubleheader from the Sea Warriors yesterday.
The Antelopes improved their overall record to 19-16, 16-12 in the Pacific West Conference. They have now won 14 of their past 18 and moved into sole possession of third place in the league. HPU fell to 18-12, 10-10 in the conference.
“We are starting to come together better as a team,” said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. “Hawaii Pacific is a solid club and they have had a lot of success. Our guys did a great job of responding this weekend. We knew this was going to be a big weekend for us. When we were at their place, they took three-of-four from us and we knew we were a better club than that. Guys are starting to believe in themselves and it is fun to watch.”
Justin Lindsey (6-3) picked up the win in game one, allowing only one run on six hits over 7.0 innings.
Mark Jarrett picked up his fourth save of the season, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings.
Trailing 1-0, GCU would score three runs in the second to claim a lead they would not relinquish.
Harlyn Griffiths led off the inning with a double and scored on a RBI single from
P.J. Garcia. Garcia would later score on an error by the Sea Warriors as part of a double steal with
Joey Bristyan who had reached by being hit by a pitch.
Ernesto Ortiz his sacrifice fly to plate Bristyan to give Canyon the 3-1 lead.
Ortiz led off the eighth with a double and scored a batter later on
Michael Pomeroy’s RBI single to up the ‘Lopes’ advantage to 4-1.
The GCU bats were held to only five hits in the opener, but played stellar defense in playing an errorless game.
The Antelopes found themselves trailing 2-0 and 3-1 in the second game of the doubleheader, but rallied for their first series sweep of the season.
A Garcia double and Pomeroy RBI single cut the Sea Warriors lead to 2-1 in the first inning.
Grand Canon scored two runs in the third on four straight hits from Garcia, Pomeroy,
Derek Mendoza and
Charles Wagner, as well as a sacrifice fly from
Jackie Samora.
The ‘Lopes secured the series sweep with a four-run outburst in the sixth inning. The inning started off with a Samora double to left center. Ortiz and
Aaron Mees each followed with singles to load the bases with no outs. Griffiths entered the game as pinch hitter and hit a sacrifice fly to right to give GCU the 4-3 lead. Brityan made it 6-3, with a bases clearing triple down the right field line. Garcia would later reach on a fielder’s choice and score on a RBI single from Pomeroy.
Pomeroy finished the game going 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Garcia, Mees and Wagner each finished with two hits.
Coley Bruns (1-2) picked up the win in relief of starter
Jorge Perez. Bruns tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Perez went 5.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits.
Sam Moore came on to get the final two outs of the game.
Grand Canyon is now off until April 10, when they will travel to Pomona, Calif. to face Cal Poly Pomona. First pitch at Scolinos Field is slated for 2 p.m.
