Coming off a successful Pacific West Conference homestand, the Grand Canyon University softball team looks to continue momentum in West Region play at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif., Friday.
The Antelopes (20-10), were 8-2 during its recent PacWest run. They will take on teams from the region at the TOC, starting off Friday with nationally-ranked UC San Diego (No. 20) and CSU Monterey Bay (No. 16). GCU is also receiving votes (3), in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll.
GCU takes on UCSD at 3:30 p.m. and CSUMB at 8 p.m. On Saturday, GCU wraps up pool play with games against Humboldt State (12:15 p.m.), San Francisco State (3:30 p.m.) and Sonoma State (6 p.m.). Bracket play is Sunday.
“It’s a very tough schedule, but we’re excited about it,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “We’re hitting our stride at the right time and we have to continue to play fundamental ball. We want to control what we can control and play on our terms.”
The Antelopes lost 6-3 to CSUMB in an early season tournament in Las Vegas and won a three-games series (2-1) with San Francisco State earlier this month.
Twenty-four teams, including eight of 10 teams from the PacWest will be participating in the event. All 24 teams are from the West Regions. Fans can follow all the games from the tournament with live stats. A link to the live coverage will be available at

After the TOC, GCU will have 18 games remaining, all in conference. The first 12 are on the road with weekend four-game series, in order, with Dominican, California Baptist and Notre Dame de Namur.
California Baptist, which is not eligible for the PacWest automatic bid, holds a one-game lead over GCU Dixie State is two games behind.
