Grand Canyon (21-11) split two games during the opening day of the Tournament of Champions at Turlock, Calif.
The Antelopes opened with a 4-1 victory over No. 20 and defending national champion UC San Diego (27-11) and dropped an 8-0 decision to No. 16 CSU Monterey Bay (25-8).
Against UC San Diego, freshman pitcher
Kiley Raica struck out four and gave up seven hits to improve to 12-5.
"Kiley pitched a great game. The defense was solid and we were up there swinging," said GCU coach Ann Pierson.
GCU defeated UCSD All-American pitcher Camille Gaito (16-5). WIth the win over UCSD Friday and taking three of four against Hawai'i Pacific Monday and Tuesday, Grand Canyon has defeated the last two NCAA Division II champions this week. HPU won in 2010.
"I'm really proud of our kids, we really went at (Gaito)," added Pierson.
Versus the Tritons, GCU scored a run each in the first two innings.
Kara Holtorf and
Lauren Regester had first-inning singles. Holtorf scored on a double by
Nicole Upshaw. In the second,
Haley Walker walked and stole second base. She scored on a single by
Stephanie Smith.
Leading 2-1, GCU added two insurance runs in the seventh. Walker, Smith and Holtorf all had one-out singles. Walker scored on an error and Smith came in on a sacrifice fly by
Kelsey Barak.
GCU had eight hits. Smith and Holtorf each had two.
Kayla Henry had her seventh triple of the season, which not only extended her single-season school record, but tied her for the career lead with Erica Ritter (2005-08).
Holtorf had her seven stolen base of the season, giving her 47 for her career, one shy of tying the all-time record held by Teddy Barry (2010-11).
GCU had seven hits, all singles, but couldn’t get anyone across the plate in its loss to the Otters. Twice, the Antelopes hit into double plays. Barak had three hits and Upshaw added two. Holtorf, who was caught in her attempt to tie the record for career steals, and
Claire Zampini each had singles.
Zampini singled to start the third and Barak had a base-hit to start the fourth, but both were erased in double plays. Holtorf, in the third, and Upshaw, in the fourth, each had singles follow the Otter twin-killings.
Kiki Sepulveda, who had won five straight decisions, took the loss and fell to 6-2.
"We had some good at-bats, but just couldn't put something together. (CSUMB) is a good team" Pierson said. "We're going to keep battling."
