First-place Grand Canyon (14-9, 5-1) finishes up the home portion of its Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association schedule with matches against Loyola Chicago Friday and Saturday at GCU Arena.
The Antelopes, who received votes in this week’s Volleyball Magazine Men’s Division I-II Top 10 Poll, hold a one-half game lead over No. 6 Lewis and a one and one-half game lead over defending national champion No. 10 Ohio State and Loyola.
It is the first time the Antelopes have received votes in a national poll.
Loyola (13-10, 4-3) defeated Ball State earlier this week. The Ramblers reached the MIVA Tournament championship last season and were the coaches’ preseason favorite to win the league this year.
GCU is coming off back-to-back weekend firsts. Two weeks ago, it earned a first-ever win over Ball State. Last weekend, the Antelopes won their first MIVA road matches and first victories over IPFW in Fort Wayne.
To stay in first place, it’s likely the ’Lopes will need to do another first. GCU is 0-8 all-time against Loyola.
“I feel we’re playing well, but we have a lot of things we’re working on to be more efficient,” said GCU coach Jeremy Price, whose club tied a school single-season record with their 14th win last week.
“Loyola is a very strong offensive team with a lot of weapons,” added Price.
GCU is 10-1 at home this season and 9-0 at GCU Arena (the ‘Lopes are 1-1 at Antelope Gymnasium).
home season ends with non-conference matches March 30-31 with Lindenwood. All home matches begin at 6 p.m. Fans unable to attend the contests this weekend with Loyola or next weekend with Lindenwood can follow the contests with live video and live stats.
