Grand Canyon heads to the road for the first time in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association with a two-match weekend set with IPFW in Fort Wayne, Ind., Friday and Saturday at Gates Sports Center.
GCU (12-9, 3-1) is one-half game behind first-place Lewis (16-4, 4-1) and tied for second with defending national champion Ohio State (13-6, 3-1). IPFW (10-8, 2-2) is tied for fourth with Loyola (10-10, 3-3).
“(Gates Sports Center) is one of the toughest places to play in our league,” said Grand Canyon coach Jeremy Price. “(IPFW) is a dangerous team with its depth. They can send three or four different players out before they find the right combination. They’re tough to prepare for with a lot of different guys that do different things.”
Along with picking up the program’s first-ever win over Ball State, last weekend’s split with the Cardinals marked the return of junior outside hitter Jordon Tarantino, who hadn’t played in a match since Jan. 28 at Hawai’i. Tarantino had 13 kills and a .400 attack average (13-3-25) in the 3-2 loss to BSU Saturday.
The Antelopes are again looking for a first-win against a MIVA rival and first-ever road MIVA win. GCU is 0-6 all-time against the Volleydons and 0-4 in Fort Wayne.
Grand Canyon goes into this weekend’s contests ranked No. 1 in the nation in digs per set (10.09). Libero Trent Bruns is ranked fourth (2.58). Outside hitter Ben Ponnet is No. 8 in the country in kills per set (3.88).
IPFW is ranked nationally in four categories. They are sixth, as a team, in both service aces per set (1.32) and assists per set (12.18) and seventh in kills per set (12.99). Omar Rivera is eighth in assists per set (10.82).
Matches will start at 4 p.m. Arizona Time. Live stats and video links, provided by the host school, will be available at www.GCULopes.com.
