VS. CHAMINADE: GCU improved to 13-0 against Chaminade after winning the first meeting this season, 68-50, on Jan. 30 in Hawai’i. Their 13 victories against the SilverSwords are tied for third-most against a single opponent behind 16 versus Cal-State Los Angeles and Western New Mexico.
WINDING DOWN: GCU will play three of their last four regular season games at home as their lone remaining road game is Feb. 25 at Academy of Art. The ‘Lopes own a 9-3 record in GCU Arena.
REGION RANKINGS: As of Feb. 12, the ‘Lopes are ranked third in the West Region behind UC San Diego and Alaska-Anchorage. PacWest foe Dixie State is ranked eighth in the poll.
LAST TIME OUT: The ‘Lopes defeated BYU-Hawai’i, 78-52, on Feb. 20 while scoring their most points at home this season and draining a season-high 10 three-pointers. GCU also forced a season-high 34 turnovers. Maylinn Smith and Jenna Pearson each had a game-high 20 points.
GETTING IT GOING EARLY: The ‘Lopes have outscored the opposition 751-506 in the first half of their 22 regular season games and have scored at least 35 points in the first half 11 times. The ‘Lopes scored a season-high 51 first-half points on Feb. 20 vs. BYU-Hawai’i. GCU has allowed a season-low 13 first half points three times this season. The ‘Lopes have trailed at the half in only two of their games and posted a season-best 30-point advantage (43-13) heading into the locker room on Jan. 11 vs. Dominican.
FEELING AT HOME…ON THE ROAD: The ‘Lopes are 10-0 on the road this season and have won 17 consecutive regular season road games (15 consecutive conference road games) dating back to last season. GCU is averaging 66.5 points-per-game away from home this season and since last season, are averaging 72.3 points-per-game on the road. GCU is averaging 63.4 points-per-game at home this season.
AMONG THE NCAA’S BEST: The ‘Lopes rank among the best NCAA Division II schools in a number of categories: first with 50.8 points-per-game-allowed, fourth with an 11.5 rebounding margin, fifth with a 32.7 defensive field goal percentage and tied for 12
th with an 85.7 won-lost percentage. Individually, Maylinn Smith’s 91.6 free throw percentage ranks fourth.
PACWEST STAT SPEAK: Among PacWest teams, the Antelopes’ 73.6 free throw percentage is second to Notre Dame de Namur’s 74.0 percent, while their 41.8 field goal percentage also ranks second to Hawai’i Pacific’s 42.9 percent and their 32.1 three-point percentage ranks third. GCU leads the conference with an 11.0 rebounding margin. Individually, Jallisa Butler ranks second in the conference with a 63.9 field goal percentage and 9.6 rebounds-per-game, while Maylinn Smith’s 16.3 points-per-game average is third.
SMITH KEEPS SCORING: Sophomore guard/forward Maylinn Smith has recorded double-digit scoring in 21 games this season, including a career-high 27 point performance at Hawai’i Pacific on Feb. 1, a game in which she also recorded her first double-double of the season (11 rebounds).
BUTLER’S IMPACT: Jallisa Butler has set career-highs in both rebounds and points this season with 19 boards on Dec. 10 at San Francisco State and 21 points on Jan. 28 at BYU-Hawai’i. She has been named PacWest Conference Women’s Player of the Week twice: for Dec. 5-11 and Jan. 16-22.
JENNA FOR THREE!: Sophomore Jenna Pearson drained six three-pointers en route to scoring a career-high 20 points on Feb. 20 vs. BYU-Hawai’i. Her six made shots behind the arc were one-shy of the school record, done on three occasions with the last coming on Feb. 5, 2009 at BYU-Hawai’i when Stacy Haddow accomplished the feat.
FRAZIER, MS. CONSISTENCY: Senior forward Joslynn Frazier has found her groove, scoring a season-best 12 points in GCU’s 67-56 victory over Cal Baptist on Feb. 11. She has 60 points in the last seven games, averaging 8.6 points per game. Frazier has had double-digit points three times.
CINDY ON THE BLOCKS: Cindy Ekweozor collected four blocks on Feb. 20 vs. BYU-Hawai’i, one shy of the single-game record of five set by Jackie Stevens on Feb. 14, 2009 vs. Notre Dame de Namur. She now has a team-high 22 blocks this season, sixth-most in the PacWest.
ALOHA!: GCU is 6-1 against the Hawai’i teams this season and overall since joining the conference, are 50-5 against those teams with one game remaining this season against Chaminade at home.
CONFERENCE PLAY: The Antelopes are in the midst of 17 consecutive PacWest Conference contests and are 11-2 during the stretch. Since joining the conference in 2006, the ‘Lopes have posted a 77-13 mark overall and have won 15 games three times: in 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2010-11.
IN THE POLLS: GCU opened the season ranked 14
th in the
USA Today/ESPN Division II Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll and were as high as ninth on Nov. 29. GCU is currently 17
th in the poll.
