VS. BYU-HAWAI’I: GCU owns a 12-1 record against Pacific West Conference member BYU-Hawai’i. The ‘Lopes won the first meeting this season, 74-51, on Jan. 28 in Hawai’i and have won five straight games against the Seasiders.
HOME SWEET HOME: After playing five of their previous six games on the road, GCU will play four of their final five regular season games at home. Their lone remaining road game is scheduled for Feb. 25 at Academy of Art. The ‘Lopes hold an 8-3 record in GCU Arena.
LAST TIME OUT: The ‘Lopes fell to Academy of Art, 72-69, on Feb. 13 at GCU Arena as the Urban Knights shot 48.3 percent from the field and 64.3 percent from behind the arc. Jallisa Butler had a career-high-tying 21 points, while Maylinn Smith added 12 points and Steve Kamp had 11.
FEELING AT HOME…ON THE ROAD: The ‘Lopes are 10-0 on the road this season and have won 17 consecutive regular season road games (15 consecutive conference road games) dating back to last season. GCU is averaging 66.5 points-per-game away from home this season and since last season, are averaging 72.3 points-per-game on the road. Comparatively speaking, GCU is averaging 62.1 points-per-game at home this season.
GETTING IT GOING EARLY: The ‘Lopes have outscored the opposition 700-481 in the first half of their 21 regular season games and have scored at least 35 points in the first half 10 times. The ‘Lopes scored a season-high-tying 45 first-half points on Dec. 9, 2011 vs. Cal State Stanislaus and Jan. 28 at BYU-Hawai’i. GCU has allowed a season-low 13 first half points three times this season. The ‘Lopes have trailed at the half in only two of their games and posted a season-best 30-point advantage (43-13) heading into the locker room on Jan. 11 vs. Dominican.
AMONG THE NCAA’S BEST: The ‘Lopes rank among the best NCAA Division II schools in a number of categories: first with a 50.8 points-per-game-allowed, second with an 11.5 rebounding margin, fifth with a 32.7 defensive field goal percentage and 13
th with an 85.7 won-lost percentage. Individually, Maylinn Smith’s 91.6 free throw percentage ranks fourth.
PACWEST STAT SPEAK: Among PacWest teams, the Antelopes’ 73.5 free throw percentage is second to Notre Dame de Namur’s 74.8 percent, while their 41.5 field goal percentage also ranks second to Hawai’i Pacific’s 42.6 percent and their 30.3 three-point percentage ranks fourth. GCU leads the conference with an 11.5 rebounding margin. Individually, Jallisa Butler leads the conference with a 66.7 field goal percentage and ranks second with 9.9 rebounds-per-game, while Maylinn Smith’s 16.1 points-per-game average is third.
SMITH KEEPS SCORING: Sophomore guard/forward Maylinn Smith has recorded double-digit scoring in 20 games this season, including a career-high 27 point performance at Hawai’i Pacific on Feb. 1, a game in which she also recorded her first double-double of the season (11 rebounds).
BUTLER’S IMPACT: Jallisa Butler has set career-highs in both rebounds and points this season with 19 boards on Dec. 10 at San Francisco State and 21 points on Jan. 28 at BYU-Hawai’i. She has been named PacWest Conference Women’s Player of the Week twice: for Dec. 5-11 and Jan. 16-22.
ALOHA!: For the fourth consecutive season, the ‘Lopes went 4-0 on their Hawaiian road trip and improved to 27-1 overall when playing in Hawai’i. Additionally, GCU has now won 20 consecutive contests in Hawai’i. Their lone loss came at Hawai’i Hilo on Jan. 18, 2008 (83-77). Overall since joining the conference, GCU is 49-5 against the Hawai’i teams with two games remaining this season against BYU-Hawai’i and Chaminade at home.
FRAZIER, MS. CONSISTENCY: Senior forward Joslynn Frazier has found her groove, scoring a season-best 12 points in GCU’s 67-56 victory over Cal Baptist on Feb. 11. She has 54 points in the last six games, averaging 9.0 points per game. Frazier has 146 points for the season (7.0 per game avg.) and has had double-digit points three times.
ALL AROUND EFFORT: GCU has had at least seven players score in all but one game this season and have five players averaging at least 5.0 points. The ‘Lopes also have 11 players averaging at least 10.0 minutes per game.
CONFERENCE PLAY: The Antelopes are in the midst of 17 consecutive PacWest Conference contests and are 10-2 during the stretch. Since joining the conference in 2006, the ‘Lopes have posted a 76-13 mark overall and have won 15 games three times: in 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2010-11.
IN THE POLLS: GCU opened the season ranked 14
th in the
USA Today/ESPN Division II Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll and moved up to ninth in the poll released on Nov. 29 after posting a 4-0 mark to start the season. The ‘Lopes are currently tied for 16
th in the poll.
