Grand Canyon (3-5) lost two games at the Third Annual Desert Stinger in Las Vegas, Nev., Saturday.
In the opener, the Antelopes fell 9-6 to Western Washington. In the nightcap, GCU lost 8-2 to No. 8 Augustana.
Freshman
Kelsey Barak had a two-run home run against WWU. In her first start of the season, freshman catcher
Brandi Gaffin went 2-for-3, hit a two-run homer and threw a runner out trying to steal.
"Everybody is really staying positve and pulling for each other. That's big," said GCU head coach Ann Pierson. "I'm really proud of how we're hanging in there and being supportive.
"We had some good at-bats, but couldn't put anything together (against Augustana)."
Lauren Regester went 1-for-2 against Augustana to extend her hitting streak to seven games. She's hitting .500 (12-for-24) over the team's first eight games. Barak,
Kayla Henry and
Nicole Upshaw also had hits against Augustana.
Frosh pitcher
Kiley Raica suffered her first loss of the season and dropped to 2-1.
Grand Canyon’s late-innings rally fell short in the opener. GCU scored two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh. Barak's two-run homer came in the sixth. She went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Down 5-0, GCU scored one in the fourth.
Claire Zampini led off with a walk and later scored on a
Brittany Manzoline single. It was 8-1 when Barak homered, knocking in Zampini ahead of her, who had walked. Barak had an RBI-single in the seventh. GCU scored three times, benefitting from three WWU errors.
GCU had just four hits and made four errors.
In her first start, Manzoline suffered the loss and is 0-1 on the year.
The Antelopes wrap up play tomorrow with a 3 p.m. contest against Simon Fraser.
"We're going to keep going after it and stay aggressive," added Pierson.
