Grand Canyon will participate in the Third Annual Desert Stinger Friday-Sunday in Las Vegas, Nev.
The tournament includes 28 teams and is hosted by Montana State-Billings. GCU will play five games, two each on Friday and Saturday and one on Sunday. Grand Canyon has participated in the event in each of the first two years and has an 8-2 all-time record in the event, including a 5-0 mark in 2010.
With a lineup that, at times, featured five freshmen and two sophomores, GCU went 3-1 during its opening weekend of games at the Grand Canyon Kickoff Classic.
“We want to continue to work hard and play the game under our terms and control what we can control,” said head coach Ann Pierson.
After losing its opener to CSU East Bay, Grand Canyon won three straight, including a pair of shutouts against Western New Mexico. The Antelopes finished up the weekend avenging its lone loss to CSU East Bay.
As a team, GCU hit .327 and had a .457 on-base percentage. The Antelopes stole five bases and hit three home runs. Freshman pitcher
Kiley Raica and sophomore pitcher
Kiki Sepulveda both had shutout wins. Raica’s came in her first collegiate start.
Grand Canyon’s four starting freshmen position players (left fielder
Haley Walker, right fielder
Kayla Henry, shortstop
Kelsey Barak and first baseman
Lauren Regester) combined to hit .422 for the four games. Walker led all GCU hitters with a .600 average, while Regester hit .545. Barak went 3-for-3 with a double and home run in her first collegiate game and Henry scored five runs, had three stolen bases and a triple.
Another newcomer, junior college transfer
Lisa Tarnowski, had two home runs and eight RBI for the weekend, including two three-run home runs.
Returning starters
Kara Holtorf,
Claire Zampini and
Stephanie Smith combined to score eight runs and had four RBI. Holtorf hit .385 for the week. Senior DP
Vanessa Chavez went 3-for-9 for the weekend as a part-time starter and pinch-hitter.
“We really want to continue our approach at the plate and be aggressive,” said Pierson.
Defensively, Pierson was happy with her team’s play, too. They had just four errors in four games. One error was quickly nullified. In Sepulveda’s 3-0 win over Western New Mexico, Barak booted a ball at short, but when the Mustang base runner tried to score from second base, Barak threw home and catcher
Christine Jordan (CJ) Norvell perfectly blocked the plate and applied the tag for an inning-ending out.
Action in Las Vegas begins Friday with a 3 p.m. contest against CSU Monterey Bay and an 8 p.m. game against Montana State-Billings. On Saturday, GCU opens with a 12:30 p.m. contest against Western Washington and takes on No. 8 Augustana (SD) at 8 p.m. Sunday’s lone game is a 3 p.m. contest against Simon Fraser.
