Grand Canyon (3-6) dropped a 9-6 extra-inning decision to Simon Fraser on the final day of the Third Annual Desert Stinger in Las Vegas, Sunday.
Simon Fraser scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to win the game.
GCU fought back from a deficit most of the day. Down 4-0 after one-half inning, GCU scored three in the bottom half of the inning.
Claire Zampini led off with a walk and
Haley Walker singled prior to a three-run homer by
Kelsey Barak, her third of the season.
Grand Canyon forced extra innings with two runs in the seventh.
Lauren Regester, who earlier in the game extended her hitting streak to eight games, reached on an error.
Brandi Gaffin,
Nicole Upshaw and
Kara Holtorf all had singles. Holtorf got an RBI, scoring
Kiki Sepulveda, who came in to run for Regester.
Vanessa Chavez, who ran for Gaffin, scored the tying run on a fielder’s choice off the bat of
Kayla Henry.
Grand Canyon out-hit Simon Fraser 15-7, but committed seven errors.
“We didn’t play fundamental defense and that extended some innings,” said GCU head coach Ann Pierson. “When the pitching struggles, the defense has to be perfect and it wasn’t.
“We played five very good teams (in Las Vegas) and we could have won four of them. We have confidence in our ability; we just have to tighten it up.”
Holtorf and Barak each had three hits. Walker and Zampini both had two hits.
GCU resumes play Saturday and next Sunday in the GCU Invitational at Stapleton-Pierson Field. The Antelopes welcome Fort Lewis, Western New Mexico and Notre Dame de Namur.
