The Grand Canyon University baseball team split their doubleheader at Cal Baptist today in Riverside, Calif., and now stands at 3-5 overall and 1-3 in Pacific West Conference play. The Lancers are 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
GCU lost the first game, 7-5, despite jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning via a
Charles Wagner two-run single with two outs. The Lancers then scored at least one run in the next five innings to post a 7-3 advantage heading into the sixth inning. The ‘Lopes then tacked on two runs to pull within two of the Lancers but were unable to mount the comeback.
GCU starter
David Wydeven was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts over 2.1 innings.
Coley Bruns tossed 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in relief of
Jorge Perez to keep GCU in the game. Lancers’ starter Devyn Rivera earned his first win of the season with 4.0 innings of three-run baseball.
Ernesto Ortiz and Wagner led the team with two RBI apiece in the contest.
“In game one, David did a nice job for us on the mound,” said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. “We were much more competitive, which was what needed to happen for us. We played a better ball game all around and were able to keep ourselves in it.”
The ‘Lopes rebounded in the second game to win, 7-4, and snap their three-game losing streak. The victory also marked their first on the road of the young 2012 season.
GCU starter
Justin Lindsey improved to 2-0 with five innings of three-run ball, allowing eight hits, a walk and three strikeouts in his second start of the season. Lancers’ starter Matt Daugherty was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts over just 1.2 innings.
“ Justin did a great job in the second game and that big second inning was good to see,” said Stankiewicz. “We were able to put some pressure on them and did the small ball stuff that is really who we are. We have to embrace that solid game and it will help us win moving forward.”
‘Lopes reliever
Mark Jarrett allowed a run over 2.0 innings of relief to secure the win and owns a 1.50 ERA (1 ER in 6.0 IP) in four relief appearances so far this season.
“Mark is a competitor and he pitches with great confidence,” Stankiewicz added. “He challenges hitters and is not afraid to go inside. You can go a long way if you believe in yourself. He had success at Mesa Community College in that type of role and he has done a great job for us.”
GCU used a seven-run second inning to open the scoring in the contest after the first five batters reached base. Wagner, who reached base after being hit by a pitch, scored the first run of the inning when
Kyle Peterson reached on an error with the bases loaded that allowed two runner to cross home plate.
P.J. Garcia had a sacrifice fly with one out before
Michael Pomeroy followed with an RBI single and
Derek Mendoza had an RBI double. Wagner returned to the plate and drew a two-out walk before
Tagg Duce plated Mendoza with an RBI double of his own. In all, the ‘Lopes had 12 plate appearances in the inning, collecting four hits while the Lancers were charged with three errors.
Pomeroy, Mendoza and Duce each collected two hits in the second game.
“P.J. continues to do a good job with that bat and shows good discipline at the plate,” added Stankiewicz. “The top of our lineup has done well and we are still trying to mix and match the back end of the lineup. We will continue to give some guys opportunities because we need to fill those roles.”
Cal Baptist scored runs in the third and fourth innings as they collected five of their game-high 12 hits in that time. The Lancers also plated a run in the sixth and seventh innings.
The ‘Lopes will next be in action when they return home to face Dixie State for back-to-back doubleheaders on Feb. 17 and 18 at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz.
“We know that Dixie State won 4 games against Academy of Art and that they are a very good ball club,” explained Stankiewicz. “We don’t know that much about them, but we do know they pitch well. We will be ready to play next weekend.”
