With only three starters in the lineup, and only two in their normal weight classes, No. 6 Grand Canyon got three key wins from backups in a 25-15 dual meet victory over Embry-Riddle at Antelope Gymnasium Friday
.
With the team score tied 3-3, GCU took the lead for good when redshirt-freshman
Marcus Haughian won by forfeit at 184. It was the first of three straight Antelope victories.
Two backups came up with the most dominating wins of the night. At 197,
Eric Fan made quick work of Troy Killgore, getting GCU six points with a fall in 2:02. The lead grew to 19-3 when second-team heavyweight
Peter Anguiano recorded eight takedowns in a 20-8 triumph over ERAU’s Elliot Taylor.
“A really great effort from Fan and Peter,” said GCU coach R.C. LaHaye. “They went out and worked hard.”
Kory DeBerry (157) and
Ryan Miller (165) were the only regulars wrestling in their usual weight classes. Defending national champion
Kyle McCrite wrestled at 133. All three were victorious in close matches. Miller opened the night by winning 8-7 over Luke Riley. McCrite, the 2012 champ at 125, was a 6-2 winner over Mason Saldana. DeBerry closed the contest with a 3-2 victory over Colin Merkley.
“Not a great performance, overall,” added LaHaye. “We’re still trying to figure some things out. The main thing is to have it figured out by March.”
GCU will wrestle Dec. 16 in Reno, Nev., at The Tournament of Champions, facing competition from all NCAA divisions and NAIA. The Antelopes return home for the much-anticipated Grand Canyon University Duals Jan. 5 at GCU Arena. Ten teams will compete in duals starting at 9 a.m. The Antelopes wrestle four teams, including a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference duals against Chadron State and Colorado Mines.
