GAME NOTES
VS. DISNEY CLASSIC: GCU makes an appearance in the Disney Classic for the second time in the Russ Pennell years. In Pennell’s first season with GCU, in 2009-10, the Antelopes went 0-3 here in Anaheim. This time around, the ‘Lopes will face three teams from the Northern Sun Conference. Up first will be Preseason NABC No. 7, Winona State. Northern State, picked eighth in the conference preseason polls will be on Saturday, followed SW Minnesota State, who was tabbed for second in the NSIC. GCU has played Winona State once in school history and has yet to face Northern State or SW Minnesota State.
LOOKING BACK: Grand Canyon is coming off a 19-8 season in which they went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007. GCU fell to eventual national champion, Western Washington, 79-73, in the opening round of the West Regional. The Antelopes won their final nine regular season games, including a buzzer-beating win over Dixie State in the season finale at Grand Canyon University Arena.
HOME SWEET HOME: GCU went 15-1 at the new Grand Canyon University Arena. The Antelopes averaged 2,278 fans per game last season, compared to 1,175 the previous year in Antelope Gym. The ‘Lopes were ninth in the nation in average attendance among all D-II schools.
ROAD IMPROVEMENTS: Grand Canyon was 4-7 on the road last season, 3-7 the previous year. The Antelopes won three of their final four road tilts.
FROM THE FLOOR: GCU averaged 72.3 points per game last season, third in the PacWest Conference. They shot .443 from the floor, sixth-best in the conference. Canyon shot 73 percent from the free throw line, best among PacWest schools. GCU pulled down an average of 35.0 rebounds per game, fourth-best in the league.
DIALING IN FROM DOWNTOWN: The Antelopes were third in the conference, shooting 36 percent last season from behind the arc. GCU, however, lost more than half of its three-point production to graduation. Steve Morin returns and was 29-for-88 (.330) from behind the arc.
