The Grand Canyon University men's basketball team dropped their season opener this afternoon, 66-64, to No. 7 Winona State at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif.
Trailing by nine points with 3:14 left in the game, GCU mounted a furious comeback that saw them close to within two and with the ball for the last shot.

Brad Carroll made four consecutive free throws to close within two,
Blake Davis forced a turnover that gave the Antelopes the ball with 33 seconds on the clock. After calling timeout with 13 seconds remaining, Davis missed a jumper that that was rebounded by
Braylon Pickrel, who then missed the last second put-back attempt.
Winona State came out of the gates quickly; opening a 30-14 first half lead over the opening 15 minutes. GCU’s
Jerome Garrison used an eight point surge, highlighted by two three pointers, to key a 16-4 run over the final five minutes to close the gap to 34-30 at the half. The Warriors shot well in the first half, making 13-of-25 shots for a 52 percent clip.
The teams traded buckets throughout the second half, with the ‘Lopes getting within two on a number of occasions. WSU extended its lead to eight at the 7:59 and 4:52 marks, before going up nine with just over three to go.
For the game, GCU shot 32.7 percent from the floor, compared to 46.2 percent for Winona. The Antelopes were outrebounded 39-34, after holding a 21-16 advantage at the half.
Grand Canyon was led in scoring by Garrison, who finished with 16.
Killian Larson had 10 points, all coming in the first half, with four rebounds. Carroll finished with 13 points, including a pair of three’s and 7-for-8 from the line.
Freshman
Jeff Lowery had nine points in his first game for GCU, leading the team to a 24-5 advantage in bench points.
The Antelopes played in front of raucous contingent on fans of nearly 500 that made the trip over from Phoenix. Seven busloads of students, as well as the band, spirit squad, staff and family created a postseason type of atmosphere.
GCU will return to action tomorrow at 9:30 p.m. (AZ time), when they face Northern State at the Anaheim Convention Center. NSU fell to UNC Pembroke in their opening game today. The game can be viewed live at
