The Grand Canyon University women’s soccer team fell, 1-0, tonight against California Baptist on the GCU Soccer Field. With the loss, the Antelopes fell to 9-7-2 overall and 8-4-2 in Pacific West Conference play following their final regular season game in 2012. The Lancers, who clinched the conference championship earlier in the week, are now 14-2-1 overall and 13-1-0 in conference play.
With their tie against Chaminade, BYU-Hawaii will receive the conference’s automatic bid for the NCAA tournament.
The Lancers outshot the ‘Lopes, 17-9, and were also awarded eight corner kicks while GCU did not attempt any in the contest.
Nicole Nsa led the offensive effort for the 'Lopes, taking four shots, one of which was on goal.
Shelby Bartusek, making her first start of the season in goal, had two saves.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie over the first 45 minutes, despite the Lancers collecting 11 shots compared to four for the ‘Lopes as each had just one on goal.
GCU came out on the defense in the second half, as they did not allow a Lancers shot until the 80
th minute. GCU had six shots in that time, one that was saved by California Baptist goalkeeper Rosie Nakata and another that bounced off the crossbar.
However, California Baptist needed just three shots to put the game-winner on the board when Kimberly Allard found the back of the net in the 83
rd minute.
