For the second straight year, Grand Canyon University women’s volleyball finds itself in the post season.
Veteran head coach Kris Naber hopes last year’s experience will help this year’s quest.
The hunger from last year’s quarterfinal loss to UC San Diego has fueled the Antelopes to one of its best seasons under the 18th-year head coach.
GCU has been nationally-ranked each week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, except for the initial preseason poll. It has also held either the No. 2 or No. 3 spot in the NCAA Division II West Region rankings.
Coming into Thursday’s quarterfinal match at the Cannon Activities Center in Laie, HI, against seventh-seeded San Francisco State, GCU is 23-5, the most wins since getting 25 in 1999, and are ranked No. 20 in the nation.
GCU is a No. 2 seed in the eight-team field. It was a No. 7 in 2011, losing to the second-seeded Tritons.
“This year we feel we have an advantage,” said Naber. “Skill aside, every team here on out is talented, but last year we came in with a deer-in-the-headlights look. This year we have more experience and focus. I think that year of experience will be a plus for us.”
The Antelopes take on the Gators at 5:30 p.m. Arizona Time. Links to live video and live stats will be available at

It will be Grand Canyon’s first match against San Fran State since a 2010 victory (3-1) on a neutral site at the Sonoma State Seawolf Spike. GCU leads the all-time series 16-1. The winner of Thursday’s match will take on the winner between third-seeded CSU San Bernardino and sixth-seeded Central Washington Friday at 8 p.m. Arizona Time. The remainder of the field includes, host and top-seed BYU-Hawai’i, Sonoma State, UC San Diego and Western Washington.
San Francisco State is a solid, well-balanced team,” added Naber. “Their setter (first-team All-West Region selection Iris Tolenada) is experienced and spreads the offense out well.
“To get through this region you will have really accomplished a lot. There are so many tough, experienced, talented teams.”
