The 18th-ranked Grand Canyon University women's basketball team will host the GCU Thanksgiving Classic for the fifth year, welcoming Fort Lewis, Western New Mexico and Minnesota-Crookston for the two-day tournament. AT GCU THANKSGIVING CLASSIC: GCU is hosting the tournament for the fifth straight year. They are 8-0 over the course of that time, and most recently picked up wins against San Francisco State and Cal State Dominguez Hills last season.
IN THE POLLS: GCU is ranked 18

USA Today Sports/ESPN Division II Preseason Coaches’ poll (updated Nov. 20). GCU has been ranked among the top-20 teams in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Coaches Poll for 33 consecutive weeks dating back to the 2010-11 season.
LAST TIME OUT: GCU went 2-0 at last weekend’s GCU Tip-Off Classic, claiming a 73-35 victory over Eastern New Mexico and a 72-56 win over Humboldt State. The ‘Lopes were led by Maylinn Smith, who averaged 9.5 points in the two-day tournament.
BIG ON THE BOARDS: GCU has outrebounded their opponents, 213-168, through their first five games. Cindy Ekweozor leads the squad with 31 rebounds, averaging 6.2 rebounds per game.
JONESIN’ FOR MORE: Judy Jones has made an immediate impact on the squad, averaging 9.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Jones was GCU’s leading scorer in their big 64-62 win over eighth-ranked UC San Diego on Nov. 10 in the Disney Classic.
PRESEASON PACWEST PREDICTIONS: GCU was picked to finish atop the PacWest standings after receiving 11 of 14 possible first place votes, as decided by conference coaches. Maylinn Smith, the reigning conference Player of the Year, was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year.
