The No. 18 Grand Canyon University women’s basketball team defeated Western New Mexico, 72-42, today in their first game as part of the GCU Thanksgiving Classic. With the win, which was the third straight for the Antelopes, they improved to 4-2 on the season while the Mustangs fell to 1-2.
The win also improved the 'Lopes to 9-0 in the history of the Thanksgiving Classic.

Judy Jones collected her first double-double of the season with a team-high 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Deanna Daniels and
Maylinn Smith also scored in double-digits with 12 points and 10 points, respectively.
The ‘Lopes posted a season-high 50.7 field goal percentage (34-for-67) while holding the Mustangs to just 16-for-59 from the field (27.1 percent).
GCU built an early 8-0 lead over the first three minutes before allowing the first Mustangs basket, a three-pointer with just under 17 minutes on the clock. Western New Mexico then outscored GCU 11-4 over the next three minutes to make it a one point game at 12-11. It was again a one-point contest at 14-13 before GCU used a 13-2 run to take 27-15 advantage with just under six minutes in the first half.
The ‘Lopes would allow just five more points to the Mustangs in the first 20 minutes, taking a 43-20 advantage into the locker room. The 43 points were the most scored by the ‘Lopes in a half this season.
GCU was led at the half by Jones with 10 points, followed by Smith and Daniels with eight points apiece. The ‘Lopes shot an impressive 60.6 percent from the field (20-for-33) in the first half while holding the Mustangs to a 27.3 percent mark (9-for-33). GCU also outrebounded Western New Mexico, 23-15, and forced 13 turnovers.
GCU’s defense held the Mustangs scoreless for nearly six minutes as they built a 30-point lead at 58-28. The ‘Lopes controlled the momentum for the entire second half as they outscored the Mustangs 29-20 and led by as many as 34 points at 72-38 with 1:27 remaining in the game.
For the game, the ‘Lopes outdueled with Mustangs in a number of categories, including points in the paint (44-to-14), points off turnovers (30-to-13) and bench points (36-to-14).
