Saturday’s women’s soccer contest between Grand Canyon and California Baptist has tremendous meaning for the Lopes as if they win, they will go to the NCAA West Region Championships for the second straight year.
Last year, the GCU women’s soccer team qualified for the championships for the first time since the inception of the women’s program back in 1996, when current head coach Stevie Gill was the captain of the GCU men’s program that won the National Championship. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. on the GCU Soccer Field.
“It is certainly a credit to the girls for battling through the season with the ridiculous number of injuries that we have encountered," said Gill. "It is always nice to be in a position to make the post-season, and being in control of your own destiny. If we beat California Baptist on Saturday in Phoenix, we move on into the playoffs. If BYU-Hawaii wins their remaining games, they would be tied on points with us but we would beat them on head-to-head play.”
The Antelopes are 9-6-2 overall and 8-3-2 in the Pacific West Conference and are currently behind California Baptist (13-2-1, 12-1-0) and Azusa Pacific (12-5-0, 11-2-0). The Lancers clinched the conference title on Tuesday, but they will not receive the PacWest's automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament because they are in their second season at the Division-II level after moving up from the NAIA. The Cougars are in their first season at the Division-II level. Teams are not eligible for postseason until their third year in D-II.
Additionally, GCU is ranked 10th in the West Region in the latest NCAA Regional poll that was released on Oct. 31.
Saturday’s game will also honor the seniors on the team, who are playing in their final home game. Fans can follow the action live by visiting
