The Grand Canyon University women’s soccer team lost, 3-1, to California Baptist today in Riverside, Calif. With the loss, the Antelopes are now 9-6-2 overall and 8-3-2 in the Pacific West Conference, while the Lancers improved to 12-2-1 overall and 11-1-0 in conference play.
It was just the second time this season that the ‘Lopes have lost back-to-back games as they are winners in six of their last eight games.
The Lancers outshot GCU, 19-14, and also held the advantage with 13 shots on goal compared to eight for the ‘Lopes. GCU was led offensively by
Veronica Nikas and
Emily Ravenhill who each had two shots on goal.
The ‘Lopes put California Baptist on the defense early, as they took three shots and placed two of those on goal in the first five minutes of the game. The Lancers responded by taking six unanswered shots and scoring two goals that were just under two minutes apart as the first came in the 20
th minute and the second in the 21
st minute.
GCU cut that deficit in half when Ravenhill found the back of the net with a shot from 25 yards out in the 30
th minute.
California Baptist held the advantage with nine shots at the half, eight of which were on goal. GCU goalkeeper
Cat Lena stopped six of those shots. The ‘Lopes attempted six shots in the first half, including three on goal. Lena finished the night with 10 saves.
The two teams played strong defensively in the second half as neither scored a goal in the first 30 minutes. However, the Lancers extended their lead to 3-1 when they successfully converted a shot over Lena’s head in the 78
th minute.
The ‘Lopes will play their final regular season game when they host California Baptist on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 8 p.m. on the GCU Soccer Field. GCU will also recognize their seniors as part of the Senior Night festivities.
