Grand Canyon’s men’s volleyball team opens its fourth season, the second under head coach Jeremy Price, Saturday afternoon at the University of Pacific.
GCU returns 13 players from the 2011 roster and Price is hopeful the experience mixed in with talented newcomers will lead to the continued growth of the young program.
“We’re coming into the second year with a better understanding of the personnel and because of that I think we’ll see a little more continuity night to night and week to week,” said Price.
“We’ll be tested early to get ready for the rigors of the MIVA.”
GCU will play three times in the next three days. The Antelopes play Pacific at 2 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. On Monday, GCU travels to UC Santa Cruz for an 8 p.m. contest. Price got his first win as the GCU head coach against UC Santa Cruz at Antelope Gymnasium to open the 2011 season. GCU split with UCSC last season and is looking for its first win (the ‘Lopes went 0-2 in 2010) over Pacific.
Fans can follow the matches at Pacific with live video streaming, audio streaming and live stats provided by the home team.
GCU went 8-24 in 2011 and among the returnees is junior libero Trent Bruns, recently named to the preseason All-MIVA team. Bruns led the league and was fifth in the nation in digs per set (2.5).
GCU opens its home schedule Jan. 13 with a 6 p.m. contest with NJIT at GCU Arena. The Antelopes will play at the arena Jan. 13-15. The remainder of the home schedule will be played at Antelope Gymnasium.
