The Grand Canyon University men's basketball team will open the New Year with a pair of games in the Bay Area, beginning tonight with a game against conference-foe Dominican. The game can be heard live at 8:30 p.m. (AZ time) on www.GCULopes.com. GCU Alum Michael Potter will call all of the action.
GAME NOTES
VS. DOMINICAN: GCU (7-2, 1-0) leads the all-time series, 3-1. GCU swept the season series last season, winning 68-60 on Jan. 22, 2011 at Dominican and 77-62 on Feb. 12, 2011 in Phoenix. The Antelopes lost at Dominican, 68-59, during the 2009-10 season. The Penguins are 1-10 overall and tonight will mark their first Pacific West Conference game.
ROAD SWING: GCU will play three of their next four games away from the friendly confines of Grand Canyon University Arena. The ‘Lopes lost their only other road contest of the season, losing 83-66 at UNLV on Nov. 11. They trailed by just one at the half to the Rebels. GCU was 3-8 on the road last season.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon defeated Arizona Christian, 83-68, on Dec. 30 at GCU Arena. Jerome Garrison led GCU with 21 points. He added four assists and four rebounds. The Antelopes shot just 39 percent from the floor, including a 4-for-22 effort from the 3-point line.
THE SENIORS: Grand Canyon enters the 2011-12 campaign with three seniors on the roster. Nick Witherill has averaged 10.3 points-per-game this season. He recorded a career-best seven assists, along with 20 points on Nov. 26 vs. Ft. Lewis. Justin Wesolowski leads the team with a 6.8 rebounding average, sixth-best in the PacWest. He pulled down a career-best 14 rebounds on Nov. 16 vs. The Master’s College.
SPEED SPEAK: Senior Kyle Speed has scored in double-digits in seven of his eight games played this season. Speed led the team in scoring in three of those games. His 13.6 points-per-game ranks seventh in the PacWest. Despite missing a game earlier this month due to injury, Speed leads the team with 249 minutes played for a 31.1 per-game average.
NO FEAR: Freshman Jerome Garrison has scored in double digits in three of his last five games. He is averaging 12.6 points per game in that stretch. Garrison has shot 50 percent from the floor (20-for-40) this season, 60 percent (6-for-10) from the 3-point arc and 91 percent from the line (29-for-32).
QUICK STARTERS: GCU has outscored their opponents 338-265 in the first half this season. They have been outscored 322-316 in the second half. They are 7-0 this season when leading going into the halftime break.
RUNNING THE FLOOR: GCU is averaging 72.7 points per game this season, tops in the PacWest Conference. They are shooting 71 percent from the free throw line, third-best among PacWest schools. GCU has pulled down an average of 37.7 rebounds per game, third-best in the league.
GET THAT STUFF OUT OF HERE: Grand Canyon leads the PacWest with a 4.1 blocks per game average. The ‘Lopes have 37 blocks in their nine games. Braylon Pickrel is leading the way with 15 blocks.
THIS AND THAT: GCU is first in the conference in turnover margin at a +1.44 per game. They are second in assist to turnover ratio at +1.0. The Antelopes are second in the PacWest with a 12.9 offensive rebound average.
UP NEXT: The ‘Lopes remain in the Bay Area and travel to play at Notre Dame de Namur on Jan. 5 in Belmont, Calif. GCU defeated NDNU in both team’s conference opener on Dec. 3 in Phoenix, 76-66. Tip-off is slated to begin at 8:30 p.m. (AZ Time).
