The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team fell this evening, 72-62, to Dominican at the Conlan Center in San Rafael, Calif.
With the loss, Grand Canyon falls to 7-3 overall, 1-1 in the Pacific West Conference. Dominican improves to 2-10, 1-0 in the league.
GCU has now lost six straight road games, dating back to Feb. 26, 2011.
Dominican pulled ahead 11-9 on a Connor Haysbert layup four minutes into the game and never trailed again. The Penguins held the Antelopes without a field goal for nearly 12 minutes in the first half and took a 38-24 lead into the break.
The Penguins increased their lead to 21 with a 7-0 run to open the second half.
“We need to have faster starts and can’t spot people points like that,” said senior
Justin Wesolowski. “We need to come out harder and try not to play from behind all of the time.”
Despite the slow start and the large deficit, GCU began to fight back. The ‘Lopes used an 11-0 run to get within seven at 49-42 with 9:40 remaining in the contest.
Seven, however, was as close as Grand Canyon would get. Dominican who shot 57 percent in the first half, followed up by shooting 56 percent in the second half and was able to thwart the Antelope rally.
Kyle Speed and Wesolowski each had 12 points to lead GCU. Wesolowski added five rebounds.
Braylon Pickrel had 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while
Chris Johnson added 11 points.
Grand Canyon was 3-for-18 from the 3-point line and are now 7-for-40 in their last two games.
“We have a quick turnaround, so we can’t dwell on this one too long,” added Wesolowski. “As a team we need stay together and I know with the guys in the room that we will do that.”
The Antelopes will next be in action on Jan. 5, when they play at Notre Dame De Namur in Belmont, Calif. GCU defeated NDNU, 76-66, on Dec. 3 at GCU Arena.
