The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team will look to rebound from a tough loss on Tuesday, when they face Notre Dame de Namur tonight at 8:30 p.m. in Belmont, Calif.
VS. NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR: GCU (7-3, 1-1) leads the all-time series, 15-3. The Antelopes defeated NDNU, 76-66, on Dec. 3 at Grand Canyon University Arena. The Argos enter tonight’s game with a 4-7 overall record and 0-3 mark in the PacWest. GCU swept the season series last season, winning 83-70 on Jan. 18, 2011 in Belmont, Calif. and 63-58 on Feb. 21 in Phoenix.
LOOKING FOR A ROAD WIN: GCU enters the night having lost their last six straight road games, dating back to the 2011 season. The Antelopes last won on the road when they defeated Dominican in San Rafael, Calif. on Jan. 22, 2011. This season, the ‘Lopes are 0-2 on the road. They lost their season opener at 17th-ranked (D-I) UNLV. GCU trailed by only one at the half. They also lost this Tuesday at Dominican.
LAST TIME OUT: Grand Canyon fell to Dominican, 72-62, on Jan. 3 at the Conlan Center in San Rafael, Calif. Kyle Speed and Justin Wesolowski each had 12. For the second-straight night the Antelopes struggled from the 3-point line, going 3-for-18.
SPEAKING OF THE 3-PT LINE: Grand Canyon is 7-for- 40 (18%) from the 3-point arc in its last two games. The ‘Lopes are shooting 31 percent (51-for-166) this season, sixth-best in the conference. Kyle Speed has made a team-best 14 three’s this season.
RUNNING THE FLOOR: GCU is averaging 71.6 points per game this season, second in the PacWest Conference. They are shooting 70 percent from the free throw line, third-best among PacWest schools. GCU has pulled down an average of 36.8 rebounds per game, third-best in the league.
GET THAT STUFF OUT OF HERE: Grand Canyon leads the PacWest with a 4.0 blocks per game average. The ‘Lopes have 40 blocks in their 10 games. Braylon Pickrel is leading the way with 16 blocks.
THIS AND THAT: GCU is first in the conference in turnover margin at a +0.90 per game. They are second in assist to turnover ratio at +0.9. The Antelopes are second in the PacWest with a 12.2 offensive rebound average.
QUICK START: GCU has won all seven games this season when leading at the half. They have lost all three games in which they have trailed at the half. GCU is outscoring their opponents 362-303 in the first half, but have been outscored 356-354 in the second.
SPEED SPEAK: Senior Kyle Speed has scored in double-digits in eight of his nine games played this season. Speed led the team in scoring in four of those games. His 13.4 points-per-game ranks seventh in the PacWest. Despite missing a game earlier this season due to injury, Speed leads the team with 280 minutes played for a 31.1 per-game average.
ON THE BOARDS: Senior Justin Wesolowski has averaged 6.6 rebounds-per-game this season, eight-best in the league. Braylon Pickrel is pulling down 5.8 rebounds per game and has a team-high 23 offensive boards.
BALANCED ATTACK: Grand Canyon has produced a balanced scoring attack this season. Seven Antelope players are averaging 7.0 or more points a game this season. Five different players have been high-point scorers in a game this season. Last season, GCU had four players finish the season with a 7.0 or more points-per-game average.
UP NEXT: The ‘Lopes return home to face Dominican on Jan. 11 at 6:30 p.m. GCU will then go back on the road to face Dixie State on Jan. 16 in St. George, Utah.
